New 5m Sail Now Class Legal For a 12 Month Trial

CLASS UPDATE: 5.0m Sail Option – 12 Month Trial

The Windsurfer Class Association of Australia has introduced a new sail option designed to make racing more accessible and enjoyable for more sailors.

For the next 12 months, sailors will be able to choose to race with the new, Class legal 5.0m sail with no restrictions.

This initiative is being introduced by the WCAA as a trial period, allowing the class to gather feedback and racing data before deciding whether the 5.0m sail should become a permanent option within the Australian class rules.

The decision follows discussions within the fleet and recognises that our sailors vary widely in size, age, strength, and sailing experience. Windsurfer LT racing has always been about participation, skill, and the spirit of one-design sailing, and this trial is intended to support that philosophy.

The 5.0m sail option offers several potential benefits:

Greater accessibility

Some sailors find the standard rig demanding in stronger winds or during longer races. The 5.0m sail offers a manageable option that allows more sailors to stay comfortable and competitive on the water.

Encouraging participation

Our goal is to keep sailors in the fleet and attract new ones. A smaller sail can make racing more achievable for lighter sailors, older sailors, and those returning to the sport.

Better racing in stronger conditions

In many Australian venues, particularly in windier locations, the 5.0m sail can allow sailors to stay in control and focus on tactics and technique rather than simply managing power.

Flexibility for sailors

Sailors can now decide which sail best suits their body weight, sailing style, and the conditions on the day.

At the end of the 12-month trial period, the WCAA will review participation levels, race results, and feedback from sailors and clubs before determining whether the 5.0m sail should become a permanent addition to the Australian class rules.

The aim of this trial is simple: more sailors racing, more often, and enjoying the sport.
